I am very
sad indeed to inform you that Ray Williams died on
Saturday 20th February
2010. Ray was XOD
Class Captain from 1966 to 1969 and won the Captain’s
Cup in 1967 and 1976. He has been a member of the
Class since about 1955 and has won nearly everything.
He owned several XODs over the years, latterly
X164 Diana, and truly loved his X boats. He
was very competitive but always fair, and was a pleasure
to sail with and to race against. His
greatest attributes were his sportsmanship and his
seamanship, but he was also great company on and off the
water, with a twinkling sense of humour. He was
kind, encouraging, always interested and very
generous. He always attended the XOD AGMs and would
always raise an important, relevant and often very
technical point. He was also always the one who
stood up at the end of the meeting to propose a vote of
thanks to the Class Captain of the day for his hard work
over the year. He was an
integral part of the X Class and will be greatly missed
by us all. Our thoughts go to Betty, Eric,
Philip and all his family. There will be a Thanksgiving Service at St
Michaels Church, Southampton, in St Michael’s
Square, off Bugle
Street, at 2.30 pm on
Wednesday 3rd March and afterwards at the
Royal Southampton Yacht Club. NEW - 22nd Feb
