Although the XOD was designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1909, the first race did not take place until 1911.It wasthus decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary in 2011.
Each Division organised it's own local events, bioth afloat and
ashore. The main celebrations were held at
Cowes during Cowes Week 2011 (6th to 13th August), which included a mid-week special Centenary mini-series of races. The Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole Harbour provided a special trophy for this, as it was the Royal Motor Yacht Club, then based at Hythe, which hosted the veryfirst race of the Class on 3rd June 1911.
The
ambition to have in excess of 100 boats on the starting line for this very special event for the Class was more than exceeded with over 140 entries.
A
special celebration dinnerwasheld in Cowes, to which all members of the Class and their guests were invited.
Two weekends
prior
to Cowes Week events were also organised at Hythe, the location for the first race in 1911.
This was part of the Central
Solent Regatta. The event was organised jointly between
the Hamble Division and the Royal Southampton Yacht
Club, who generously offered their facilities and
support to the event.
