X39 Gone Away

1928 by Woodnutt

Sailed and campaigned by the owners over more than a quarter of a century, Gone Away has been professionally maintained throughout that time with an annual programme of improvement and updating.  In the nineties she had a new deck fitted.  Major renovation in 2008/9 – she was fully splined and epoxied, dead wood replaced, new rudder stock and tube, keel removed and shot blasted and new keel bolts.

Fully equipped (Harken), everything needed to get afloat and sail today – North sails, spinny pole, cockpit cover, anchor and even the original sweep!  Stored in Haines boatyard, Itchenor.

Gone Away has an impeccable pedigree.

Gone Away has long had the well-deserved reputation as being the prettiest boat that Woodnutts ever built.  Built in 1928 she was probably the first boat from Westmacott’s yard after he conceded his monopoly.  It is almost as if he is making a special effort to make her look extra pretty …. Her performance is also right up with the best Woodnutts and she has a fine sailing record.”   From an encyclopaedia of X boats 1911 – 2011 by Richard Field, Class Historian.

Had an excellent racing record and in the “Winner” fleet when I had a regular crew and better sails! Can be seen in Chidham, Chichester.
